Natural Disasters in Brazil:
1. TSUNAMIS: Tsunamis do not affect Brazil as much as some countries are, though along the coast, they do not go without notice.
2. FLOODING: Along the Amazon River, which is the largest river in the world, can easily overflow due to its water occupancy. If it does happen to overflow, massive floods happen. It can take up to six months for the water to recede. 3. EARTHQUAKES: Though they are not common, earthquakes can happen in any country. |
Notable Disaster:
In 2010, northeastern Brazil experienced a widespread flood towards the end of June. Alagoas and Pernambuco were where the flooding mostly took place. These villages were actually swept away. Literally! This event killed dozens and hundreds disappeared. At least 120,000 people had to leave their homes.
President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio da Silva, arranged an emergency session to attempt to aid the victims. Though his intentions were pure and the plan was well thought through, these areas were very hard to aid due to their isolated and rural areas with few intact roads.
